G’day Mate! I am stuffed!

Long Weekend – Australia Day

By John On January 22, 2009 · 8 Comments · In Intermediate

intermediateA long weekend is coming!

Yes, that is right! Next Monday I don’t have to go to work! It is a holiday for Australia Day!

A long weekend is when either Friday or Monday is a public holiday, and people don’t have to go to work or school. It is called a long weekend, because usually weekends have only 2 days off (Saturday and Sunday).

But on a long weekend there are 3 or sometimes even 4 days off.

For example: Easter is a long weekend, because we have Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday off work and school. So Easter is a 4 day long weekend!

Australia Day is only 1 day – Monday. So I will have a 3 day long weekend!

Question: What are some of the long weekends in your country?

Easter is a long weekend also in Italy. Then there are other long weekends but they change from year to year because they depend on in which days of the week the public holidays fall.
What do Australian people celebrate next Monday?

Chiara – We celebrated Australia Day. This day celebrates the day that the first Europeans came to live in Australia. We remember our history and the hard work our ancestors have made in making our country. We also remember the sad times of our history. Many of us also show our respect to the Australian Aboriginal people who are the true owners of the land of this country. Australia has a very, very long history. It also has a very different history to most countries.

On Australia Day most people enjoy a nice meal with their family.

Roberta – Thank you for sharing the holidays in Switzerland! Were you born in Switzerland? I imagine it is a beautiful place! To answer your questions:

QUESTION 1: In south of switzerland, where I’m living[I've been living?]

    ANSWER 1: Both are correct!

I’m living = I am living there now
I’ve been living = I am living there and have been living there recently (It sounds like you have not always moved there – and you moved there recently)

    QUESTION 2:
    8 december Immaculate (?)

    ANSWER 2:
    8 December The Immaculate Conception

      Hi dhean.

I’m sorry, but you are incorrect. Saturday and Sunday are not holidays. They are the weekend.

So you should say: Saturday and Sunday is the weekend.

A holiday is a day that people normally work. On a holiday, they don’t need to go to work. For example, I usually work every Monday, but next Monday I won’t. SO: Next monday is a holiday.

      I hope this helps!
