LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION – FUNNY!

0
comments

Here is a letter.  This letter is called a `letter of recommendation`.

A letter of recommendation is a letter a boss writes for a worker who is leaving the company.

The worker will show the letter to a new  company. They will use the letter to show they are a good worker. They will use the letter to help them find a new job.

Please read the letter.

Think about:

Is Trever Adams a good worker?                        TIP: Use your dictionary for any new words!

—————————————————————————–

To Whom It May Concern

Trevor Adams, my assistant programmer, can always be found

hard at work in his cubicle. Trevor works independently, without

wasting company time talking to colleagues. Trevor never

thinks twice about assisting fellow employees, and he always

finishes given assignments on time… Often he takes extended

measures to complete his work, sometimes skipping coffee

breaks. Trevor is a dedicated individual who has absolutely no

vanity in spite of his high accomplishments and profound

knowledge in his field.. I firmly believe that Trevor can be

classed as a high-calibre employee, the type that cannot be

dispensed with. Consequently, I truly recommend that Trevor be

promoted to executive management, and a proposal will be

executed as soon as possible.

Yours Sincerely

Bill Manager

Addendum……

The idiot was standing over my shoulder while I wrote this report.

Kindly re-read only every second line.

—————————————————————————–

Now read the letter again, but ONLY READ EVERY SECOND LINE!

ACTIVITY

Is Trever Adams a good worker?

Tell me TWO things that Trevor is NOT good at.

Chocolate?? And Easter? What??

What is Easter and Why Do You Eat Chocolate at Easter?

One of my friends asks: I love chocolate!! But I don’t know “Easter“. Why is Easter a day of chocolate?

A: Good Question!!

Actually, many people do not know why we eat chocolate at Easter.

Part 1: What is Easter?

A: Easter is a special holiday that comes once a year, like Christmas.

Christmas is every December 25, but Easter does not follow the usual calendar.

Easter is always on the first Sunday after the full moon on or following the spring equinox.

The date for Easter changes every year, as the day of the full moon is different every year.

Sometimes it is in March and sometimes in April.

Easter is celebrated over 4 days:

  • Easter Friday
  • Easter Saturday
  • Easter Sunday
  • Easter Monday

Why 4 days?

Easter is a time when Christians remember something important that Jesus did for us all.

Jesus died on the cross on a Friday. He then remained dead on the Saturday, but rose to life again on a Sunday.

In Western Countries we celebrate God’s gift for us by:

  • Easter Friday – Eating ‘Hot Cross Buns‘. these are buns that have a cross on them.
  • Easter Sunday – Giving gifts of chocolate to people.

Many people also go to church on these days.

Many people do not go to church every week in Western countries anymore, but they will often still go to church at Easter.

So that is a simple outline of Easter!

Tomorrow: Part 2 – Why do we eat chocolate at Easter?

Question: Do you know what ‘Hot Cross Buns’ are?

Activity: What does ‘equinox’ mean? take a look in a dictionary, and let me know in the comments!

John’s Comment:

Many of these tips are great for learning English too! To improve your English you should write something EVERYDAY! You can do this is a book, on your computer or in the Ask John English Discussion forum, or your blog!

WHAT TO DO:

1) Choose a topic to write about. You might just describe what you did yesterday, or you might write your opinion about something.

2) Write about it for 10 – 20 minutes. Just write. Don’t edit. This step is a chance to build your ability to THINK in English.

3) Read what you have written. You can now make changes to it.

4) If you are brave – share your writing with others!

A great place to share is on your blog in the Ask John English site.

GO ON! GIVE IT A TRY FOR ONE WEEK! You will be surprised how helpful it is!
